Resilience is the order of the day, when it comes to the Cuban people. Nations in the western hemisphere, for the most part, have turned their backs on Cuba. Due either to cruel international laws that they’re afraid to “violate,” or cow-towing and cowardice.
Embargoed and nearly strangled to death by a blockade placed on the Island nation since 1960, by the U.S. and allies, Cuba… to a great degree, appears to be frozen in time.
Medicine and education, two of the island-nation’s greatest assets have not translated into modernization of Cuba’s aging infrastructure and dilapidated buildings.
A snapshot of the majority of Cuba’s fleet of cars gives the appearance of relics of dinosaurs frozen in time… in need of a Jurassic Park-style resurrection.
The Obama administration to date has moved in the right direction towards helping to heal the wounds of the Cuban people. Although, much to the chagrin of many “Cuban Exiles” living in Dade and Broward Counties.
Pandering Florida politicians promote and back the strangulation of Cubans on the Island, because they know it’s an emotional security blanket for the older generation of Cubans living in South Florida — for the most part. Dreaming of fighting Fidel from the safety of their living room is a favorite pastime of theirs.
Over the years, Castro has made several missteps that contributed to the severance of relationship with the US and further tightening of sanctions against his country. Such as the nationalization of American oil refineries and privately owned businesses, without compensation to their owners to name a few.
After Batista and his crew fled Cuba and Castro took over, President Eisenhower and (in)Fidel Castro, from the get-go began playing a game of chicken. Who won? America won, Castro won, the Cuban people lost. They were the ones who suffered and paid the price.
Obama has lifted the travel restrictions and America and Cuba have reestablished diplomatic relationship. USA companies are opening businesses again in Cuba. Kudos to Obama on that front.
Now with the passing of Castro, maybe the Cubans can finally say Libertad at last and Cuba Libre (free Cuba) and mean it!
